The Foundation was established in 1992 by the Hungarian National Committee for Technological Development, with the purpose of creating an institute suited to provide efficient applied technological and scientific research and development. The Foundation operates as a non-profit organisation and its research and development activity is carried out in the institutes that it has established and owns. The focus of operations at the institutes is on applied research tasks. The Institute for Applied Telecommunication Technologies has been established in 2005, with the major focus on Ambient Intelligence.

Experience shows that „ambient intelligence” (Ami) systems in industrial applications integrate and enhance the results of four main competence areas: communication technologies, microelectronics and microsensorics, software technology, and human-machine interface. The group provides basic and applied research and development in the field of Ami technologies. Besides providing AmI applications for industry partners in Hungary, it participates in a German-Hungarian joint research program supported by both governments.
